Washington, D.C. — Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05) today released the following statement upon hearing that North Korea has claimed to have detonated a hydrogen bomb.

“While its ire is focused mainly at America, North Korea isn’t solely an American problem.  Even their neighbor and ally, the People’s Republic of China, has a hard time keeping Kim Jong-un’s unstable leadership from undermining the region.  Real American leadership should work toward the goal of containing erratic states with the rest of the international community.  Unfortunately, this administration has shirked their objective of shifting its direction to the Asia-Pacific region and instead has focused on empowering and enriching one of North Korea’s only allies and largest supplier, Iran.  If their claims prove to be true, North Korea is once again saber-rattling and attempting to destabilize the region all in a pathetic attempt to gain international prominence and continue to oppress and starve their own people with fake pronouncements of enemies at the gate.”

Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05) serves on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific. He is also a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
